About Five Nights at Freddy's

Five Nights at Freddy's, also known as FNAF, is a survival horror game created by Scott Cawthon. You play as the new night guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a family restaurant filled with animatronic characters that become dangerously active after dark.

Your shift lasts from 12 AM to 6 AM, and your goal is simple: survive until morning.

You cannot fight the animatronics or leave the security office. Instead, you must watch the security cameras, check both hallways, close the doors when danger gets too close, and carefully manage a limited supply of electricity.

Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy all behave differently, so surviving each night means learning how they move and knowing when to use your defenses.

The first night may feel manageable, but every shift becomes more difficult as the animatronics grow increasingly aggressive.

How to Survive

Surviving Five Nights at Freddy's is all about observation, timing, and power management.

You spend most of the night inside the security office. From there, you can access cameras placed around Freddy Fazbear's Pizza and monitor different rooms.

The animatronics begin away from your office, but they gradually move through the building.

Your job is to figure out where they are before they reach you.

Controls

The controls are simple and primarily use the mouse:

  • Mouse — look left and right around the office
  • CAM button — open or close the security camera monitor
  • Camera map — switch between different rooms
  • Door buttons — close the left or right security door
  • Light buttons — check the hallways outside your office

The controls are easy to learn, but choosing the right moment to use them becomes increasingly difficult.

Watch the Cameras

Security cameras are your main source of information.

Check them regularly to see where the animatronics are moving, but avoid constantly switching between every camera. Doing so can distract you from threats that are already close to your office.

Pay particular attention to important locations and learn the routes each animatronic usually takes.

You should also keep an eye on Pirate Cove, where Foxy waits.

Check the Doors

Bonnie usually approaches from the left side, while Chica generally approaches from the right.

Use the hallway lights for quick checks.

If an animatronic is standing outside, close the appropriate security door. Once it leaves, open the door again to save electricity.

Keeping both doors closed may feel safe, but it will drain your power far too quickly.

Power Management

Almost everything you do consumes electricity.

Using cameras, turning on lights, and keeping doors closed all increase power usage.

If your power reaches 0%, the office goes dark and your security systems stop working.

That means:

  • No cameras
  • No hallway lights
  • No powered doors

And the night may not be over yet.

The best strategy is to use your tools only when you need them.

Night Aggression Tip
1 Low Learn the camera layout and controls
2 Medium Pay more attention to Pirate Cove
3+ High Check entrances regularly and conserve power

Listen carefully. Movement sounds, kitchen noises, and other audio cues can give you useful information about what is happening around the restaurant.

Meet the Animatronics

The original Five Nights at Freddy's features four main animatronics, and each one presents a different threat.

Freddy Fazbear

Freddy Fazbear is the main mascot of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza.

He becomes increasingly dangerous during later nights and can be harder to track than some of the other animatronics.

Once Freddy begins moving, keeping track of his position becomes an important part of surviving the night.

Bonnie

Bonnie is the purple rabbit animatronic.

He normally approaches your office from the left side and can move surprisingly quickly through the restaurant.

Use the left hallway light when you suspect Bonnie is nearby. If he is standing outside the office, close the left door until he leaves.

Chica

Chica is the yellow chicken animatronic and usually approaches from the right side.

Watch her movement through the cameras and use the right hallway light when necessary.

Like Bonnie, Chica becomes more aggressive as the nights get harder.

Foxy

Foxy behaves differently from the other animatronics.

He waits inside Pirate Cove and can eventually rush toward your office if you fail to keep track of him.

Managing Foxy while also watching Freddy, Bonnie, and Chica is one of the game's biggest challenges.

Why Is Five Nights at Freddy's So Scary?

Five Nights at Freddy's does not rely on constant chases or complicated combat.

Most of the horror comes from waiting and uncertainty.

You might check a camera and see Bonnie standing in one room. A few moments later, you check again and discover that he has disappeared.

You know he moved.

You just do not know exactly where he went.

That uncertainty makes even simple actions stressful. Opening the camera monitor, checking a hallway, or hearing an unexpected sound can suddenly become important.

The game is famous for its jumpscares, but much of the tension comes from anticipating them rather than seeing them.

You always know something is moving through the building.

The question is how close it has already gotten.

Tips for Surviving Longer

Don't keep both doors closed.
Doors use too much electricity. Leave them open unless an animatronic is actually nearby.

Use hallway lights briefly.
Turn on the light, check the entrance, and switch it off again.

Keep an eye on Pirate Cove.
Do not forget about Foxy while tracking the other animatronics.

Learn a routine.
Efficient camera and hallway checks are much better than randomly clicking everything.

Pay attention to sound.
Audio cues can sometimes give you information that the cameras do not.

Stay calm.
Panic often leads to unnecessary camera checks, lights, and closed doors, which can waste the electricity you need later.

About the FNAF Series

Five Nights at Freddy's began as a relatively simple indie horror game but quickly grew into a much larger franchise.

Its combination of memorable animatronics, survival gameplay, hidden details, mysterious events, and unanswered questions encouraged players to explore the story behind Freddy Fazbear's Pizza.

The series later expanded with games such as Five Nights at Freddy's 2, FNAF 3, FNAF 4, FNAF World, Sister Location, Ultimate Custom Night, Help Wanted, and Security Breach.

Despite everything that came later, the original game remains one of the clearest examples of what makes FNAF unique: limited information, limited resources, recognizable characters, and the constant feeling that something is getting closer.
